Pretty as you please

5 new year resolutions for a happier planet

As we step into 2024, we’re likely all getting our resolutions, for a better, healthier version of ourselves, in place. But, ever wondered if any of these resolutions could help fight the global climate crisis? Or simply just lower the pollution around us? It isn’t all that daunting, really. For we’re here to help you plan. Here are our top five resolutions that can get you started on the path to contributing to a healthier planet.

I will shop my closet before hitting those sales. The most sustainable garment is always the one you already own. So, let’s start from there. Open your wardrobe, browse through the items. Try being innovative, do some mix-n-match or perhaps, upcycle them into something new. If it’s too new to be upcycled, but not something you see yourself ever wearing, give it to a friend who will, or resell it. Not only is this a great exercise for the planet, but also for your creative self. After all, what we wear reflects our personality. Before every purchase, think if you may already own something similar. Are you going to get 30 wears out of that garment? Is it really worth it? Also, remember, retail therapy isn’t really therapy.

I will consider secondhand options before I start looking for new options. Secondhand fashion is a booming market, right now, with numerous facets and options. You can thrift or attend a swap party to score a vintage piece or even a luxury item. Borrow that favourite dress of your friend’s that you’ve had an eye on, for a special occasion. Renting is another really affordable option, and you get to flaunt your favourite luxury brands for almost half the price. Honestly, it’s a win, whichever way you look at it–for you, for the planet and for your wallet!

I will only invest in quality clothing. Buying handmade or artisan-made is a great option to not only make a quality purchase but to also do your part in supporting artisans’ livelihoods. Buy local. It might be a bit heavy on the pocket, but think long-term. The product is going to last you years, reducing the waste that goes into the landfills. Plus, more often than not, it’s made of natural fibres, using planet-friendly processes. So even when you’re done with it, it won’t be hurting the planet. The planet is happy, and so are you!

I will choose homegrown over fast fashion. Most homegrown brands tend to use quality textiles, produce smaller batches, and have a pretty small and transparent supply chain, providing you with a more sustainable supply chain. Fast fashion may well be more affordable and accessible, but it comes with a heavier price, really–the planet and the people who make our clothes. And when we return those items we don’t like, after all, not only are we adding to the carbon emissions but we are also contributing to the waste in landfills.

I will embrace visible mending. Fix your clothes, however you can, and let your style do some storytelling. If you don’t know where to start, try YouTube. We are also fortunate to  be living in the age of social media, where experts are sharing easy ways to mend. The idea is to not throw away something just because it needs a little repair. Your clothes are you. The more you care for them, the longer they stay with you!
