Fashion and the SDGs: An arts contest by Fashion Revolution India

It’s been 10 years since one of fashion’s largest human tragedies took place, at the Rana Plaza in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Every year since, Fashion Revolution, the world’s largest organization advocating for change in the garment and textile industry, in the wake of the disaster, has been organizing a Fashion Revolution Week. Part of this Week, for the last three years, has been an art contest, organized by Fashion Revolution India, in partnership with Fairtrade India.

Divided into two themes, each headlining two Sustainable Development Goals each, the contest invites students from colleges and universities, across India, to participate by reimagining a just and equitable fashion system. “Everyone has a role to play in building a better fashion ecosystem,” says Aastha Jain, head researcher at Fashion Revolution India and the project head. “Students are both the present customers and future fashion industry leaders. Through the Fair Fashion Art Contest, FR India aims to shift mindsets and open the dialogue of sustainable development in both, universities and schools.”

The students were free, alone or in groups, to depict their SDG of choice through illustrations, collages, zines or  infographics, on how the SDG intersects with fashion. The artworks could be a focus on a particular aspect of the SDG, a quote, or even a vision of an ideal world. In partnership with Fashion Revolution India and Fairtrade India, here’s presenting the 8 best artworks that came in:
