Established in 2011, in Goa, No Nasties is one of India’s few brands that subscribes to a host of international certifications and agencies, verifying the brand’s claims and ensuring complete transparency in their processes. An organic, vegan clothing brand, they use Global Organic Textile Standards (GOTS)-certified organic cotton for their creations, they have been rated ‘Great’ by Good on You, their factories are Fairtrade-certified, they’ve even been certified by PETA, and their impact report has been ratified by Green Story.

No Nasties promote their garments as planet-positive clothing and call them a ‘labour of love’—love for the planet, love for fellow beings, love for good design. But what does any of this really mean? Let’s find out.

PRETTY FOR
THE PLANET

4.5/5

Most of No Nasties’ clothing is made from 100% GOTS-certified organic cotton, sourced from Chetna Organic, in Orissa. Grown without any synthetic chemicals, this cotton is high on water and energy savings, is better for the land and also for the health of those who cultivate it and work with it. And that’s only the beginning. No Nasties runs a number of circular initiatives, under Circular Closet, which allows existing customers to send back garments they no longer wear, so these clothes don’t end up in landfill. The pieces that are good as new are resold through Relove. Those with minor rips, stains or tears are given a repair and refresh, and donated to charity. And the ones that have reached end-of-life are ripped back into yarn, rewoven, and reincarnated into new clothes, as part of their Reshirt programme.

No Nasties has run a ‘buy one, get one tree’ plan, since 2017, through which they’ve been planting a tree, at the ‘No Nasties Grove’, for every sale, to offset the carbon footprint from the manufacturing and shipping. In 2022, they switched it up to three trees for every sale. Currently at 1,15,000 trees, their mission is to plant a million trees by 2030. They’re calling it #MissionMillion. No Nasties also invest in carbon offset projects for solar power, wind energy and reforestation.

And we’re not even done yet! No Nasties products are economically-packed in reusable organic cotton drawstring bags, and shipped in self-sealing recycled cardboard boxes, ensuring their packaging is plastic-free and near-zero waste. But what we love the most is their complete transparency. Their real-time impact report, in collaboration with Green Story, updates you on the brand’s water savings, energy savings, emissions and land impact, and is available for all to see live on their website.

PRETTY FOR
THE PEOPLE

5/5

No Nasties has a completely transparent supply chain, from the organic cotton farm, Chetna Organic in Odisha, to the Fairtrade factory, Rajlakshmi Mills in Kolkata and Noida. The details of all facilities as well as credit to all team members is all there on the website, for all to see. They follow strict ethical and environmental standards, with no child labour being imperative. In fact, founder Apurv Kothari has been on the country team of Fashion Revolution India for a few years, and No Nasties has been frontlining the #whomademyclothes campaign.

For many years, No Nasties ran an initiative to empower women from cotton-farming communities, by upcycling factory waste and recycling post-consumer clothing into a fashion accessory, to provide a secondary, assured income, called Once Upon a Doug. Unfortunately, Covid drove the plan to shut down.

PRETTY FOR
YOU

4/5

No Nasties creates accessible, minimalistic designs for men and women, in solid colours as well as quirky prints. They also offer zero-waste knits for cooler climes, and have recently introduced an athleisure collection. While some of their dresses have pockets, most of their women’s pants don’t! Also, we love how concise their collections are, but their designs conform to a certain mood, so may not be for everyone. Their easy-going comfort vibe makes No Nasties a great option for WFH wear. They ship worldwide, and have quite an international presence, too.

No Nasties also offers custom printing on bulk orders, and undertakes backend work for new brands looking for inroads into sustainability, ensuring green fabrics and ethical production for them.
